We have a small problem, and I was hoping someone might help us.
A while back Ryk found out that the best way to get us to let him in was by knocking on the door. He prefers knocking to barking. The problem is when we´re at our cabin… he knocks on the window. I´m afraid that he will break the window. The window is right next to the front door.
Any ideas to how to get him to stop knocking?

hi not quite sure how to deter him, but you can get some glass protector ( like plastic on a roll ) that sticks to the window and strenghtens it. that way if he does break the glass, he shouldn't cut his paw. hope thats useful cris

You need him to have an unpleasant response to the knocking rather than the door opening. I would suggest a strong water pistol. You need to wait until he knocks and then squirt him without making a noise - so that he thinks it is the knocking that causes the water. At the same time train him to do something different. This could be to sit infront of the door - you need someone outside who can tell you as soon as he sits - so that you can instantly reward him by opening the door.
If you wanted to be more sophisticated - you could rig up a door bell with the button on a piece of wood which he can put his foot on. Then train him to put his foot on it for a treat. Once he has the hang of it - connect up the bell and retreat inside and wait for him to ring the bell to be let in! This would take a few days of intense training but may be worth it.

It's easier to teach him to rattle an old set of keys in the door(not the right ones obviously) or an old fashioned bell on a ribbon, this is how we trained our lot to let us know if they needed out,if we heard the bell it was pee-pee time!LOL
