Found an advert today www.preloved.co.uk someone is selling all there dogs as there are moving abroad. The one that caught my eye was a boerboelx bull [bull what i dont no] Breed by topdrive kennels so could be an American bulldog. Advertised as a serious guard dog. Thought it was abit of a strange x and couldn't find anything on there website to say that this was common place. Thoughts? Simon

Have known about Topdrive and their crossings for a long time. Have to say that is a good looking dog in the pic, whatever it is.

Just went on to Topdrives new site,I must say they have some good looking dogs there, they have really raised their game.I adore their Presa bitch from America, except for the lack of depth of chest.I really, really like the Presas but am just a bit wary of the temperament of some,I guess just like all breeds really.

The brindle dog does it for me [ghero] and a dont really like brindle's. Still seems an odd thing to do. x a boerboel with a bull. Boerboel with a presa i can see although they dont mention it any where on there site. I wonder what they get from the Boerboel to improve the presa assuming that's why they do it. Hope thats not glaringly obvious?!!

Yeah they do have a BB male, was told a long time ago by them that they were closing up shop and getting rid of all their dogs, including their BB.I also think it is quite obvious he has also been used but they don't have any mention of him.I can only imagine it is to give the Presa more substance as some in Britain are quite weedy, whatever the reasons I'm sure we'll never get to know. I also say I am not a fan of the brindle but I think I am now converted after having a litter with 5 in it and especially after seeing a particular stunning bitch at the weekend in Martine and Alan's Jada,I absolutely adore her colour, conformation and temperament!!What a girl,I am going to take piccies next time I'm there and will post up.

Here are some pics of our very first bb - Maya. Lovely looking dog. great appraisal score but she was afraid of her own shadow and had really bad hips. She was put to sleep at the age of 2 due to her hips. But she sure was a lovely looking dog. She had that redstreak in her that I love so much and the pic's doesn't give her credit for that!

Hi Ewa,
She was a beautiful dog, what a shame you had to lose her. Ralph has very similar colouring. I just love the red colour.

hi ju really think you need to see them in the flesh, photos dont do justice. Of the 5 Toska had, 2 of them were a lovely, almost silver colour, very reminicant of snow leopards (i know the markings are different but that's the only way i can describe it) Beauty is that lovely dark colour, and Ralph is almost golden, a huge range of different colours cris

There's no doubting she was a lovely dog and to have her put down at such a young age is very sad. Red is still my favourite. I think i need to get out and see some more BB's in the flesh. As a matter of interest is there any difference in temperament and character associated with colour?

I've heard a "tale" that brindles are supposed to be more nervous, aggressive and guardy. I sure met some who were too. But I also met one coulered ones that were behaving exactly the same so I don't know how much credits there is to the story.

Hi Ewa,
My theory is that people react differently to different coloured dogs. Most people's experience of brindle coloured dogs is of Pitball types, that makes them nervous of those dogs. This means that the people react differently and that makes the dogs behave differently, which creates the stories!
In actual fact there are nervous and aggressive dogs of all colours and breeds. The issue with BBs is that a bite from one is much more serious than one from another smaller breed.
There are other similar myths about other dogs - with collies it is that those with blue eyes are less trustworthy than brown.

Hi Geri, I no there lots of myths which is why i posed the question. I know with R Ridgebacks it is generally accepted those with amber eyes are more mischievous for wont I've a better description and those with darker colouring are more aloof. I appreciate there are always exception to the rule but i was just wondering if such traits existed in certain BB colouring/lines

Simon,
I don't believe that the traits are related to colour but will be related to some extent to lines. Some people want to have a dog with stronger drives for working but when a litter is born there will be a range of natural drives and temperament, in the same way as a range of hip scores etc..
Tem as those who have met her know, has a great temperament - she just loves to be cuddled by just anyone but she is also strong willed and wants to be top dog. She needed careful training to ensure that she was friendly with everyone. I deliberately trained her to be that way. Someone else may have chosen to keep her less socialised and I have no doubt that she could have been trained to be reserved with people.
I like my dogs to be sociable and they will still guard. Tem would defend me with her life from any threat and infact guards the space around me, irrespective of where I am.
