Can not believe the wording of this advert in the Horse and Hound "This is a large breed dog that is very intelligent, loyal, biddable and incredibly agile for it's size. They are very good with children and make wonderful family pets." This is how people end up with a dog they were not expecting. Geri

We have a guy over here that uses almost the same wordings;
"The bb is a guard/farmdog that goes well with all and everybody. Other animals, children etc is no problem. Suitable in a farms, apartment or house." (My translation)
He also says; "He's the only Sabt-approved breeder in Sweden
To finnish this off; he starts off selling his puppies at 13.000 Skr and is now down at 10.000.
He has also redone a mating with the exact same 2 parents that gave demodex in their previous litter.
How fed up can one get? Ewa

Geri,I am sorry you are being harsh on these people needlessly. What has this person said that is not true.Don't know about yours but our Bb's ARE intelligent,loyal,biddable and incredibly agile for their size,our Bb's ARE wonderful with children and DO make wonderful family pets.For verification on this ask Jules and Clive,Martine and Alan,any number of people that have been to visit us.This statement describes our Bb's to a tee. I know for a fact that this person is very carefully vetting who the pups go to.Mopsa is the grandmother of these pups and I can absolutely assure you that you will NEVER,EVER in a month of Sundays find a better family pet than Mopsa and her offspring,siblings etc I expect no less from similar lines.I also know the father of these pups and his lines and he is also a sweetie. It is all down to what you have as your own BB,what you have experienced and what your expectations are I suppose,rant now finished.

Sandra I can't speak for Geri but what I oppose to is that by using wordings like that you make it sound like they are Labradors - which we all know they're not. I totally agree with you on how your dogs are and see the same in my own - but I also know how much work I've put into making my dogs that way. I also lived with a bb that did not have it however much training I put into it. As for getting along with all other animals - don't show my girls a cat

Yep,would have to agree,two of mine,Raz and Shady(akita) would chase a cat,the others are not fussed.Raz would come back but Shady wouldn't!! I recognise the danger in wording like this but if the person is vetting properly there should be no harm in it,and yes they have to stress the training and socialisation required to get them like that.

Sandra,
The problem isn't the vetting that this particular breeder is doing it is telling people that all BBs are like this. I would equally object to the same wording for a Rottweiller or Doberman or German Shepherd or indeed a border collie. These are specialized dogs which need careful up bringing.
People will read this advert and then go and buy from a different un-scrupulous person who just wants to make money and never realise until it is too late that they have bought a guarding breed. There is always a range of dominance levels in any litter of puppies and not all of them will be "biddable".
As you know Tem would also fit this description but she would also kill to protect me. I have rescued many collies from people who just mis-understood the breed and had thought they had bought an ideal family pet. This is why so many collies end up in rescue. We don't want to see the same happening with BBs.

As you yourself will know through advertising you can only get so many words for so much money.I would rather advertise like this person has and then strictly vet and explain to the people that come to visit than advertise it as a large guarding breed and have all manner of tosser on the phone and not be able to vet anybody.IMO most Bb's are biddable,IMO they want to be with you as part of the family.I have NEVER had a BB run away but have had plenty of Akitas take a hike without me across a field leaving me trailing in their wake.We always tell Akita puppy buyers that if they allow their Akita to run loose in a park at 9mths old that it won't come back until it's 3yrs old!!!!LOL

Just to add my tuppence worth, advertising of this breed is a bit of a minefield, if you say they are a guarding breed, you get the macho types that want a dog just like themselves, if you say they are softies, you get little old ladies who can't stand up to a strong breeze, let alone a Boerboel! Personally, I think careful vetting is the answer for your own puppies, but as has been said, this doesn't stop someone you turn down, going elsewhere and taking their misconceptions with them. We need a phrase like they have in the horse world "not a novice ride". Perhaps, "experienced dog owners only", or "a naturally dominant breed that requires experienced ownership" or something similar. I do believe that this is definitely not a breed for first time dog owners to learn on, the risks are too high and in the end, it is usually the dog that suffers. I am sure your puppies will only go to the very best homes and be checked upon constantly, but you care, others don't.

I agree with you sandra, its very important to vet the people correctly and maybe even see where they live, cause people might not be who you think they are. I was out walking with the dogs and was approached the other day with a young guy. Totally loved the dog but for the wrong reasons, as jenny said. He quoted ' I would love to walk down the street with that dog man, its maasive'. All he wants it for is to be invisable no one can touch me , our my dog will kill you. So its upto us as owners to do our best and explain to people, that these dogs are not for the novice dog owner. They require alot of work just like any other animal, our even child its a full time job
