I´m opening up a new thread on this subject Sandra since it's kind of OT and doesn't belong in the litter section!
Lucky hubby! Hope you'll post loads of pics. Or e-mail me privately.
If you want some serious tips on training hunting dogs you really should get over here for the BBQ. Most likely a friend of ours, that also happens to be one of Sweden's best hunting dog trainers, is coming along for a meal.
Anyway, in my experience with my springers theres really only a few thing to remember, start off at 8 weeks with getting them to come when you call them, then in a few weeks, start hiding yourself on the walks. Too many springer owners can't have them loose since they won't come when called and run for the hills when let loose.
I work with a whistle pipe from 8 Weeks of age. Just a few directives and a different sound for each one. I use a whistle made out of horn (antler).
Also start the retrieving work early, on land if puppy doesn't like to get its feet wet! It will come in time. All mine swam like fishes but one didn't go into water until 9 months old.
If you haven't had a springer before you'll find that its one dog that gives you more than you paid for it It´s full off energy, easy to train but will test you as long as it lives, stable as a rock in temper. The one negative thing I've noticed is that it's verybreed bound - it likes it own breed but not other dogs.
Just maybe, maybe, maybe I'm getting myself a new one next year. Theres a mating of black and whites that I'm interested in.
My last spaniel and my first bb
