Is as far as we know something that happens when the Dame is infected with the Herpes virus. The infection gets passed on to the puppies while they are being born. We also had a problem with puppies dying. It was not due to the Herpes virus but The symptoms were similar:
When we first moved into the house where we are now. Some of our litters had low survival rates, something new to us. On day 10 the puppies developed a runny stomach, on day 11 they lost interest in feeding. They started to dehydrate (you can see the skin folding on the stomach), they lost interest in all stimuli but we could see that they were in pain. By day 14 they had died.
We contacted our vets, but the vets said that all sorts of things could be wrong. We sent a couple of pups for dissection to find out what had killed them. The answer came back that it was EColi bacteria. In itself this does not tell us much, as EColi is normal flora in the digestive system, what was happening was that the puppy got weak, the bacteria could come into the bloodstream and it built up in the organs and destroyed them.
It gave us a clue to start a sort of treatment for the pups that got ill. The vets did not know how to help us and the pups were dying anyway if they got ill, so we started using our knowledge to find out how we could save them.
This is the treatment we now use if there are any problems. Since we have started using this treatment we have not lost any puppies.
Firstly you have to be observant of any problems and if any are noticed, the treatment has to start immediately.
The first noticable problem is the runny stomach, as soon as this is seen the puppy has to start on a diet of concentrated stomach bacteria, you can buy this at a vet or chemists.
Then you have to immediately treat the dehydration as this is what weakens the puppy. We inject 50mL of "Ringer Lactate" every 3 to 4 hours, more if neccesary. Ringer Lactate is an isotonic fluid (contains the same concentration of salts as your body) so you cannot give too much, it also contains Lactate where the puppy can get some energy.the puppy will just pee it out again if it gets too much. Important DO NOT USE GLUCOSE SOLUTION, this will feed the bacteria.
To battle the EColi that wanders over into the bloodstream when the puppy is weakened, we use "clamoxyl vet" It is pennicillin. The first injection is 0,5mL, after that we inject twice a day for 10 days with 0,1mL . Talk to your vet and tell him/her what is happening and what you need.
List
1 x 50mL syringe
1 x 2mL syringe
1 pack needles (green size)
1 box Ringer lactate
1 x 60mL tube of concentrated bacteria to stabilise the stomach flora.
1 x 100mL bottle of Clamoxyl (active ingredient is Amoxicillin) or a substitute for this.
We have all of these things on hand "just in case".
Anyone wishing to can contact us.
