Angel comes from a very good combination (Kejser x Maya), she was top scoring SABT female in Germany 2006 and one of her litter sisters scored top SABT female in Belgium 2006. A lot of the pups from that combination have very good pigmentation. We have heard about black Boerboels, but all of the pictures we have seen closely, seem to show brindles, very dark brindles but brindles none the less. Shaun

I personally think a black BB would be stunning but if we are having an issue with piebalds/Irish I imagine there is going to be an issue with blacks. There was supposed to be a meeting at the weekend about the black BB but haven't heard any results. Sorry I haven't been posting much but due to the Parvo last year am having to work to pay all the vets bills !! Still thinking of the doggies though and have got a nightshift job so I am here through the day for the dogs, sad or what!

I think I'm the one going in the opposite direction in here! (As usuall!)
The coloration of Kejsers offspring's reminds me too much of a rottweiler and therefore, to me, it's not the correct color of a bb.
As for a black bb - Probably extremely stunning but same goes as for the rottweiler look - not my cup of tea! I don''t like piebalds either - they remind me too much of overgrown amstaffs! Sorry Sandra!
These examples are just my thoughts on what a bb should look like. I'm sure if we all got together and told what our "perfect bb" should look like we all end up with different dogs!
I don't mind if they all look different as long as there's a base too it that will tell people - this is a bb. Ewa

Hi Ewa, I like the deep red but I also don't like the dark brindles. Some of Toska's puppies were fawn with brindle markings and I like those better. Given a choice though I think I would prefer a red or fawn or light brown. As to piebalds - well I like the look - my horse is piebald but where there is pink skin under white coat there are skin problems! I wouldn't swop my horse but his skin issues are a real pain. I'm not sure about black- it doesn't seem to be a real BB colour. One of the reasons I love going to crufts is there are hundreds of different dogs and thousands of people and everyone thinks their favourite breed is the most beautiful. So for every type of BB there will be a person who believes it is best. There just has to be a common BB underneath the differences. So you are not alone! Geri

The coloration of Kejsers offspring's reminds me too much of a rottweiler and therefore, to me, it's not the correct color of a bb. Only a few of Kejser´s litters have taken this pattern, most are a light brown colour that is no different to any other Boerboel. If you meet Angel in the flesh, you will see that she is red/brown in colour (accepted) and that she has an enormous pigmentation which gives the impression (at a distance and in photos) of creating a pattern in her coat. This is just an illusion and just shows that we are right when we say that it is impossible to judge a dog by looking at a photo. This is just what a breeder/appraiser did regarding Angel and one of her sisters on a public talk board in Germany, telling everyone that they would be disqualified for and that we were using Rottweilers in our breeding, so much more satisfaction for us when she scored the best in Germany. ;D I personally would not mind a Black Boerboel, and if we ever had a puppy that was black, it would live it´s life out here as a pet. We have had Piebalds, and although they are accepted by SABT, we are sure that this is just temporary, so we try to avoid having them. They same with Blue Boerboels, we know which of our dogs carry the genes for blue, and we avoid pairing them. Shaun

I get the impression, that if I look really closely at the pictures, in at least 3 of them I can see a lighter brown colour in places. I would certainly want to see these dogs in the flesh before making my mind up as to whether they were brindles or black.

I think there is a dark red tone in there somewhere. Not 100% black. Don't worry Ewa about your opinion, everybody is different and as much as I love the pies,a kennel of good natured, healthy reds is my aim.

hi sandra funny how we all like different things! i prefer the fawn colour with black mask like Toska, one of her pups from this litter is the spitting image of his mum (just a lot smaller at the moment!) However some of the other fawns at the appraisal actually resembled labs and boxers which i didnt like at all! cris

Shaun; I think I might have been a bit unclear in what I meant - "not being correct bb's" - with this I mean what a bb should look lika according to MY book - Not in the breed standard as it stands today. I know they've scored very well and I love the way Kejser and Maya are built and what their faces look like. It's just the coloration I mind. That's just me! I have this image in my head as to how the bb should look like (or what I believe it has looked like and neither of my own dogs apply to that vision but they're still the 2 best bb's in my neck of the woods Sandra; If that is your vision, then I know were to get the next one Meike; I second Shaun on the photos, I see brown in them too. Really interesting photos but I have to agree with Shaun I would l want to see the dog in the flesh. Photos can be very deceptive. The good thing is that we all like different colours so when there is a litter to share we will all want a different one There is no doubt that Angel is a beautiful dog and no doubt her puppies are going to win prizes as well. Hi Guys Just to throw a spanner in the works - as long as they're healthy does it really matter what colour they are?In the years to come knowing the way the UK has gone we could be accused of being un PC & dog racist ;D Ju

Ju,
I think we have to accept that the colour of a dog is part of the breed make up. This has always been true. I don't agree with putting puppies to sleep because they are the wrong colour or as is the case with RR without ridges. Those puppies should be homed as pets just not bred on. It is our responsibility as breeders to make sure such puppies are neutered in the same way as we should try and prevent our dogs being cross bred. It is one of our criteria for choosing owners if they have a dog of a breed which they might consider mating with a BB, they won't get a puppy from us!
As to which colour is best - it is all a matter of personal choice and in the end the range of colours for me makes the BB such a great breed. In the end as breeders we need to ensure that we continue breeding from all of them so that no one colour becomes "correct" through choice or fashion.
In the UK the RR have become predominantly red due to the over breeding of one red stud dog and the size of the dog has gradually changed due to showing criteria.
