;D
We have what looks to be a little sunshine story here. 2 weeks ago Anasha Fiona gave birth to a single puppy and then proceeded to ignore him. She would not clean him or feed him. After a couple of hours observation, we took him away from her because it was obvious that he would die if we did not take action. In the meantime Fiona had managed to tread on his paw leaving an open wound.
He did not manage to get anything to eat from his mother at all and that almost certainly means that he had no chances of surviving.
We started feeding him powdered goats milk every other hour. Sure enough on the 3rd day we noticed undigested milk in his stools and a tendency to runny stomach (slime and blood). We then started giving him Zoo-Lac ( concentrated bacteria) to compete with the dangerous bacteria in his stomach and Pennicillin to combat any bacteria that had gotten into his blood.
It has been a battle, and at first he started loosing interest in his food. Then with the zoo-lac and antibiotic he got a little better. We could see that his interest in feeding started returning. The stools still had a bad colour, smell and consistancy. He had some breathing problems and we were sure that he would die when he was a week old. We deliberately cut down on the amount of food he got at each feeding and increased the amount of times he was fed to compensate, we did this so that there would not be so much pressure on the lungs and heart.
When he was 10 days old he reached a turning point, he was very hungry and we increased the amount of milk.
Today he is 14 days old and has gained a lot of weight. He is very strong and does not mind complaining if we are not quick enough to feed him or empty his bladder. (The mother usually does this by licking the stomach and anus, we wash him in warm water massaging the mentioned areas).
Today we are quite sure that he will survive, we have stopped the antibiotic treatment 3 days ago but we will continue to give him zoo-lac until his stools are the correct consistancy.
;D

What a sad and at the same time happy story. I hope, the little guy will grow up to be a strong, happy BB. All my best wishes for him.

Hi Sandra,
It is ok - by the time we get there he will be a big strong pup - with no sign of having been ill and Anne will relent and let me cuddle him. After all he is having Anne's full super care treatment so he will grow twice as fast.

Here is a little update on Anasha Sonny and the first photos of this little fighter. For a long time we had our doubts whether he would make it or not. He is 7 weeks today and a lovely little guy. He just wants to explore the whole world and is a real personality. No need to say that Sonny has convinced Shaun and I to let him stay with us. Anne

Oh he is even cuter now There is no way you were ever going to let him go but I would get him electronically tagged so that he bleeps if anyone tries to sneak off with him. Check Sandra's car especially carefully if she comes to visit. I reckon her van might have a secret compartment.!!

Hi Marty,
I saw Sonny when he was very little and I freely admit that I was afraid that he wouldn't make it. All credit to Anne and Shaun for their hard work in raising him. I have been priviledged to watch Shaun working to resuscitate a puppy - born looking fine but not breathing. It took in one case 45 minutes and I really thought there was no hope ... but after much mouth -to- mouth, suddenly it took a breath and now is a very healthy fully grown BB. Considering that the birth process usually takes 12 hours and somehow always starts late at night - this is a considerable feat of endurance.
The first birth I helped with I sat down after 10 hours and fell dead asleep. Shaun shook me awake an hour later to help with two puppies who needed some extra care. He was still wide awake and only slept when he was convinced there were no more puppies and all were safely settled with mum.
It is so great to see pictures like these which show what can be done.
Geri
