Hi Guys Is everyone on half-term along with their kids? Have posted the same message on UKBC board - Was out the other day & saw a chap walking his Rottie on a prong collar. To me this seems medieval - your European views please. Ju

Hi Ju! Halfterm doesn't start untill next week over here Anyway; prong collars! To me, personally, they're medieval torture things! I would see it as a total (and very personal) failur of dogtraining if I had to use this kind of things. To the best of my knowledge they are forbidden in Sweden but I heard that you can still buy them in some dogshops. I also heard people, who I hold in high esteem saying , that if you know how to use them, then they are very useful. Well - I for one don't want to lern how to use them! Ewa

They are only good if you know what you are doing - and most people do not know anything about them. So unless you know what you want and know how to do it - don´t use them! The effect maybe there quickly but this will change and can detroy the dog´s trust in you and will worsen the effect you used it for.

If you need to use a prong collar it is because you have failed in training you dog and has no control over it. They are not allowed in Denmark and I for one would never use one. Half-term was last week in Denmark. Regards Anne

I know some people use them for "fine-tuning". But the dog then has to knwo what he should do and you are not allowed to hurt him with it. It´s hard to explain in englisch, you do not pull to cause pain or harm, you just twitch a little bit (f.e if the dog should walk closer to you). People who use it this way wnat to get more points in trials, I do dogsport because of the fun, not because of the points. I have never used them on my dogs, I will never say never but if so, something went wrong long before. I hope to never be in a situation like this. They are allowed in germany, I think instead of banning people should learn how NOT to use them and learn alternative things to do. In 99% of the dogs they work. The other 1% should go to a very good trainer. Maybe it should be banned for private persons - but they will use it anyway

Hi ,
Paul and I have been having a luxurious few days staying with Anne and Shaun. I am still convinced that the bathroom is a communal sauna room, designed for wild partys with at least 30 people!
Anyway we had a great time and the dogs were stunning. I particularly liked Buli a young male that we will certainly be using in our breeding programme.
Thanks for such a great time

My partner Nicola uses one for her american bulldog x Dogue. I really dont like the look of them and wouldnt use one in public as they look so barbaric; though this said they arent what they look like and you need to handle one / try it on your own arm to understand how it works. I wouldnt recomend them as they are only effective if used correctly and they can be mis used, though in the right hands they are excellent and serve a purpose. Tests were done and they proved to be more humane than a choke chain. I personally agree that one should have complete controll of a dog and should be able to controll them on just a collar, though the reason Nicola uses one is the one in a thousand chance Oscar see's a fox or cat and wants to chase after it Nicola needs 100% controll.
The RSPCA are against them and I would tend to agree, there are too many idiots who would miss use them if they were more widely used.... but in the right hands they are a superb tool (im not saying I am right or wrong, just presenting another view point)

Hi Jonathan do you get any instructions on how to use the prong collar when purchased or is it down to the individual and trial and error?Regards Paul.

Hi Paul, that depends on the manufacturer. If one was to buy one in a pet shop I would expect them to clarify the proper technique first. It is used in the exact manner that a check chain is used - though as you know, allot of people mis-use these also.
