Hi Guys Can any of you prove to me that a 'house' kept BB as opposed to a kenneled one that is just run out with others twice a day or so etc live in harmony with not only its same breed but other breeds 24/7. This would mean no dog gates to separate or different rooms etc. No cages in house etc. I truly do not believe that a BB will live 24/7 with another dog without there being issues - it seems to be the nature of the breed. All of the above obviously only relates to 'ADULT' BBs. If this is the case then prospective owners should be told surely? If not I am more than happy to visit & see for myself that I am wrong. Regards Ju

Hi Julie, we sold a female Boerboel (when she was 8 weeks old) who is now 5 years old. She lives with a mops??(adult), a Bullmastiff (adult) and a 1 year old female BB without any problems. They are all house dogs. They have bones and treats that they share without fights. The old BB rules and the others never question her leadership. We have 3 adult BB's living together 24/7, a 4 year old male and 2 females that are between 2 and 2½ years old. They are kennel dogs. Anne

Ju IMO the diversity, and I mean diversity, of other many breeds that has gone into the makeup of what is now know as a Boerboel makes defining any collective behavior almost impossible at this time. Can Boerboels live together? Yes. Can dominate Boerboels of the same sex live together in harmony? Not likely. Not just because they are Boerboels but because of two dominate dogs living in close proximity is an accident waiting to happen. In the example Anne gave all other dogs were submissive to one, but what if they all weren’t submissive, would the harmony that is in evidence now still prevail, I think not. Some breeds such as the Malamute have more of a dominance issue than others breeds and because of the particular breeds that are part and parcel of the Boerboel some of this dominance will often shown itself. That said the good news is the mastiff type in general is not as susceptible to pack hierarchy as say the herder types so the chances, all things being equal, are better than most. Regards Norman

Hello Norman, you are right that dominating dogs of the same sex would have problems, it is important that the rules regarding pack dynamics are obeyed. It should also be said that our 2 stud males tolerate each other, and no fights have happened at the present time, but I would also add that we are carefull in avoiding situations that can lead to problems, ie the presence of a female in heat. Both males show an incredible tolerance towards other males, 3 years ago I would never have believed that 2 male Boerboels could be so tolerant.
I think it is a bit dangerous to generalise, I am sure that there is at least a partial representation of the Ridgeback in most Boerboels, and that is a hound. The Boerboel seems to us to be a natural dog with a dog language that is more clear and understandable than other "civilised" races.

Hi Anne Excuse me once again for being dim - you stated you have 3 dogs living together, yet your last phrase was that they are kennel dogs? Even if not would you leave them together unsupervised? Regards Ju

Hi Norman Good to hear your take. Does Gordo live alone or is he separated if you have other dogs? I guess I'm a crap owner as as much as I have tried Buse will not tolerate another dog of either sex living in the house with her 24/7 when they reach a certain age.(She has been spayed)The first was a RR bitch & the 2nd was Sim a male BB. Clash of the Titans springs to mind. Would just like to 'get peoples heads out of the sand' on this issue. Regards Ju

Hi Julie, they are together 24/7 and they never fight. They eat, sleep and play together in a very large kennel with an even larger outdoor kennel and they can go in and out as they please. I mentioned that they were kennel dogs just as I mentioned that the other dogs I talked about were house dogs. When we lived at our old house we had 4 females and 1 male, all adults living together. When we went to work the were in the house on their own and we never had any problems. Kind regards Anne

Bakkies lived 3 years together with my Pitbull male. Now he lives with a female German Shepered.
Bakkies had a lot of female hormones when Spike was alive. Spike was the boss and there was no doubt about that. After 6 month after Spike died, he had no female hormones at all, his male hormones have increased. He is very dominate towards Hanja. If he had shown this behavior towards Spike, Spike would have kicked his ass (*sorry*)
Ju, maybe we all can meet at Anne´s house? Would be great, we are visiting them in November.
Regards Meike

Hi Ju! Great pic's. Clive's looking fit As for multiple bb's living together. I had Chili and Mubi toghether for a long time but in no way effortless. One day it just didn't work anymore, cost me a fortune in vetbills. Now Chili lives with Totte, which works fine and Mubi lives with a bb male of her own. All three (four with Mubis male) are intact (gender). Ewa

Hi Ju
You got some lovely piccies of the gang there. I wanted to say thanks for taking the "orka" as Sandra recommended it to me. We have been looking for other indestructable (well fairly anyway!) for Snoop, other than a kong for quite sometime. I bought him one yesterday he went crazy over it, now Snoop and Orka are inseperable!! ;D

Hi Ewa Sorry to hear about Mube - but I'm sure she's doing great with her new BB friend & also know you probably still see her all the time! Clive is good & so is Buse.Did you have your BBQ last weekend? Love to all Ju
Hi Uma Thankyou for allowing me to visit - Tanner is a lovely boy. Re hair you 'cow' you still look good. Was pleased to see this morning that Victoria Beckham has copied my new hairstyle. LOL
Hi Ursula They are great toys.Buse managed to destroy her Konga but as yet has not done so with the Orca. Its funny seeing them when you fill it with treats.Sim would roll it about the floor & the treats would drop out whereas Buse 'attacks' it to try & get at the treats - who said females are more intelligent?

Ju,
What's an 'orca'? Is it the toy in the pic? My Boo just destroys everthing. I'm always on the look out for a new toy for her.

Hi Simon Yes its the toy in the pic.The other 'spikes' without the rope can be filled with treats to keep 'little darlings' amused. Also have a 'boomer ball' which Buse isn't that interested in as its too big for her to bite. Also another good tip IMHO is a forklift tyre - they have no wire in them unlike car & lorry tyres - these can then be punctured & treats put in the outer or inner rim. Regards Ju

Hi Patience Sorry for the post about forklift tyres not being clear - after 40+ years in the manufacturing business of tyres you forget. There are 2 types - solids with no wire & pneumatics that are air compressed.Easy to spot the difference, the latter has a valve. Regards Ju

Since this has gone all OT by your own choice Ju ( ;D) I feel free to reply! My bunch won't go near neither the boomer ball or the egg! But give Chili any kind of traditional ball and she'll have a blast, even 5 minutes after getting it and "killing it"! We've learned the hard way to love having something slimy, slippery and sort of oval shaped tossed at us 24/7 ;D But they will all three play like mad with this tiny, tiny cat/small dog toy in latex with a very long tail without even puncturing it So you tell me; is it my dogs or me that's weird ;D Ewa

Hi Ewa I told you attention span of a goldfish that's me! But was just replying to Simon & Norman re the Orca. No you're not weird you daft lassie neither are your dogs. Buse I don't think would fair well with a soft toy though - she is too prey driven. Her favourites are rabbit, fox, badger & pheasant - the latter she still hasn't work out that she'll never catch one as they fly ! Hi Ewa I told you attention span of a goldfish that's me! But was just replying to Simon & Norman re the Orca. Did in NO way take it personally!!! ALL dogs are diffrent and my dogs like the Orca you brought us! No you're not weird you daft lassie neither are your dogs. There will probably be quite a few persons saying the opposite But then we all thrive! Little tip; keep a check on Chilis page, we've been to BBI appraisal in Denmark. But since our pc is currently working its own way we can't tell when we can update with pic's on Chilis homepage.
