Hi Guys Just wanted thought/input on this one. Have just picked up the local paper & one of our local vets is in trouble- would like comments & where breeders stand (even though I am not) in this area of the law.I will try to summarise as best I can: A Vet has been accused of chopping off puppies' tails without good reason. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has brought disciplinary action against *** He is accused of docking the tails of 11 Weimaranar puppies at the request of the owner. He is accused by the governing body of carrying out an unacceptable mutilation of the puppies in January of this year & of disgraceful conduct in a professional respect. He will face charges infront of RCVS disciplinary committe in London on Dec12 - the hearing is expected to last 3 days. If found guilty - he will be struck off. Docking tails is only legal if the animal is a working dog.
All of the above is not myself but a reporter. As the BB is not KC registered I am presuming it is not illegal to dock?If it was KC registered - would it be classed as a working dog?Does this ban apply to working breeds as well next year when docking becomes illegal in the UK? Sorry to be so long winded & apologies for anyone who has lapsed into a Coma reading this - I'm very ignorant on some matters but inquisitive at the same time. Ju

Docking on any dogs is not illegal yet,but the RCVS may take action against a vet.Scottish law is different from the rest of Britain and will have a docking ban in place before you guys.Yes,the BB will be in the working group but even with it not being KC reg at the minute you cannot have pups docked after the ban is in force. For some reason the vets who dock through the council of docked breeds are not prosecuted? I can't answer as to why not, sorry.

Thats interesting Sandra. As you know we do not dock our puppies unless medically necessary. So far this has not happened. At the moment the breed standard is docked or undocked so as both are acceptable we prefer them not to be docked.Regards Paul.

Our vet says'Oh it's a shame that the breed is so clumsy and breaks so many puppies tails!'

I stand to be corrected but i was under the impression it is no longer legal to dock your dogs tail for any reason. A vet can do this procedure if it can be justified.Just because its a working dog is not an automatic ok. I know this was a hot topic when i use to work gundogs

Still legal at the moment ,though not a lot of vets will do it for fear of the RCVS coming down on them.Best to join the council of docked breeds and they can advise fully. We are very lucky and the vet we use for tails travels to us and brings an assistant-NORMALLY!!!!(See prior posts!LOL) Sandra.

Docking was forbidden over here about 15 years ago. Back the I owned 3 springer spaniels without tail. The discussion was much the same as the one you guys currently are having. Some vet's will find loopholes in the law and do it, some won't. There was an immense increase in "injuries during puppy hood" to the tail and so on.
Let's not get into the discussion from the show people! The SKK (swedish kennel club) also made a ruling that definitely wasn't in favor for docked dogs.
But now, most people are rather content over here. Due to a changing in import regulations we start to see (mainly) mastinos and dob's that come in with cut tails and ears but I don't think it ever will be allowed again. (cut ears has been forbidden for ages).
I live with one bb thats docked and one that isn't and my preference is tail for many reasons. It's a lot easier to read the bb with a tail and the tail is very useful as a "handle /grip" when you need to steer up your dog, f.ex. when we go swimming - I hold on to the root of her tail to steer her and help her float correctly. I also get questioned a lot about why the older one hasn't got a tail and if it isn't forbidden anymore. Ewa

Ewa Something to make you laugh I was in Mexico one 'winter' & got friendly with a tiger sanctuary owner & he asked would I like to go out with him to exercise one of the Siberians & a panther. Stupidly I said yes. Myself, this guy,an adult tiger & black panther went out into the middle of nowhere in the ocean & exercised them.I was with the Siberian & was just instructed 'hold onto his tail' & he'll take you for a swim- no probs I thought (but a bit sceptical as claws & teeth all intact).Imagine my surprise when the d**n thing dived down - thought Cats didn't like water.Anyrate the point of this message is - Yes a tail intact is better, just my views. PS The vet I posted about has now been found guilty. Ju

Haha! I can just see your when the cat dived!!!
What is it with Central America? We do the most strange things while over there! I went on a horseback ride in Guatemala, along a volcano and all of a sudden I find myself hanging upside down from the cliff, holding on to some turfs of grass, literary for my life! Didn't have the time to grab the horses tail!
Well obviously I got up again! Hubby got to act the rescuer on his brown horse.

Sounds like you and me are made from the same material! Hubbys kids always tells us to start act our ages - I just don't realize why? I mean there's so many sensible grown ups out there so why on earth should I join that mass when I'm having so much fun doing things my way? Ewa
