Sadly there was a news story yesterday about the RSPCA prosecuting a family for cruelty to their labrador which had been impounded because it could barely walk. It weighed over eleven stone. The amazing thing is the court case ruled that the family weren't cruel and so the dog is going back to them. The man was actually on the TV defending himself saying the dog was eleven so what else did people expect? I would like to shoot him! Geri

I read it today in the paper its a disgrace poor dog.And the court had the cheek to give it back, its cruel to the dog to put it through that. The dog looked like it would not be able to move but role around

We've just had a program running on Swedish telly, but it came from the U:K about fat dogs and their owners. There was one owner of a rottie - and I tell you, the rottie was a cube! and she just couldn't see the problem. If the dog died from over feeding she reasoned well then at least she knew that the dog had had a good life!!! It was horrible to see her defend her feeding habit for all it was worth and not listen to other people. The other dogs/owners on the show at least realized that their dogs had a problem. But I must admit, my very own parents did the same thing with a spaniel I re homed with them and I had to take him away from them and put him on a diet. Took some time to get him down but I did it and had a great help from my 3 female spaniels that would chase him outdoors Ewa

Hi Ewa,
There was video of this dog on the telly and now that it is down to 8 stone it could still barely walk and the owner was defending by saying the dog was old and shouldn't expect to be able to walk. It made me very angry!
My dogs aren't thin but I wouldn't let them get that fat!

I also read/watched about this I think choc lab on the tele. Poor dog is all I can say - & yes wasn't it infuriating that the courts let the dog stay with the 'owners'. At least its a step in the right direction though - for instance if I over fed my children to the point of morbid obesity I don't think I could be taken to court. Ju

Unfortunately the current laws say that animals need to almost dead before the RSPCA can act. Although there is some hope of a change. I used to keep my horse in a shared field and there was a pony which the owner wouldn't feed. I and another girl ended up feeding it all winter and looking after it because the RSPCA said we had to leave it to starve for them to be able to act. But there is little hope when the courts just let the people off as though lack of intention to harm or ignorance was a suitable excuse.
You are right about over weight children being neglected but I believe if they were fat enough to be unable to walk, social services would take them in to care.

Hi Geri Tell me about these stupid PC laws! Last week there was a farmer who had had 12 healthy horses 'dumped' on his land. The problem being the year before he had been prosecuted for mistreatment of his cattle & banned from ever owning an animal for life. He contacted RSPCA/ police etc so they could 'rescue' them - no-one was able to under present laws - even though he had been banned - how stupid is that? Happy ending though- as the farmer had gone public about his dilemma & had stated he would have them put down- virtually overnight the horses were removed by someone. We have since been able to find out that they were owned by 'travellers' but where the horses used to graze - with all this rain their area had become flooded. As regards children - if they were fat enough to be unable to walk the serious damage has already been done. Ju

Hi Ju,
I don't know why travellers are above the law. Locally to wellingborough they graze their horses on council land and because the council were fed up with people complaining they decided to sell them some land for a nominal fee!!
No-one decides to sell me land for a nominal fee and if I put my horse in someone else's field I have no doubt I would be prosecuted PDQ!

It is a great shame that the goverment do not put more into educating the general public about caring correctly for their animals.I am sure a lot of these overweight cases are more through ignorance that cruel intentions but still potentially harmful to the animals. Regards Paul.
