On Geri's request we're now offering swedish (and probably norweigan?? Helene??) lesson for those interested ;D
Here's some phrases Geri's dying to know in swedish;
Would you like some more beer? Proper swedish; Vill du ha mer öl? Not so proper; ska 'ru ha mer bier eller?
Shall I open another bottle of wine? Ska jag öppna en flaska vin till? Not so proper; Ska vi dela en flaska till?
That was a great meal, I can't eat anything more thank you. Tack så mycket för maten, den var fantastisk och jag är proppmätt. Not so proper; Det var supergott och jag är skitmätt, tack.
This is the puppy I would like to take home. Det är den här valpen jag vill ta med mig hem. Not so proper; Det är DEN jag ska ha!
Now Geri, be-aware, the last phrase does not work on A & S - I've worn it out ;D
And guy's - spare me the spell check - it only goes haywired with so much swedish! Ewa

But you missed out - I need to buy more chocolate. Let´s see… Jag mäste kjöpa mer chockolade. (Ewa, does it look ok?) In norwagian it would be; Jeg må kjøpe mer sjokolade.

Meike Need 'get out of bed immediately you lazy child' & 'Do not drink Coke in the morning' Max & Ben have been 'busted' - have been around to our local Tesco Express & one of the chaps showed me the list of swear words Max had written down for him in German! They were out at an all-night party on a farm Saturday - so came back looking like death - but I made them play silly games with us, like Charades,Millionaire etc then let them go to bed at 8 as neither of them could keep their eyes open! Raus aus dem Bett du faules Stück "Stück" can also be replaced with "Kind" - maybe a little bit nicer

Ju, I believe childline will also deal with complaints from exchange children as well as your's. Perhaps your son needs the german phrases to phone with.. "My mother is mad, please send air fare for both of us now" "Will you give sanctuary to a poor english child in need of rescue?" I'm sure Meike can help him. Just joking Geri

Cris He has now learnt to swear in Russian,Latvian & Greek His Mum will love me. Also Clive has been teaching him Cockney ryhming slang! As well as Beth - the original Mrs Malintrop- explaining her own kind of English - which goes backwards,forwards,sideways - in fact anyway that doesn't make sense

Cris This child is stretching my patience to the limit! He spent all his money Monday on a designer pair of trainers, so I have to fund him for his trips etc. Have to keep reminding him about 'Please' & 'Thankyou'. When he is here he just wants to sit in the bedroom & play on the PS2. Eating me out of house & home.Won't get out of bed in the morning so I have now taken to accosting him with a wet flannel. Last night I asked him to do the washing up - his face was a picture & he took 10 minutes looking for a dish-washer. Then to top it all he started running the tap but over the back, not in the sink with cold water & flooded the kitchen.Meanwhile Buse had been in the garden 'digging' came flying back in & muddy paw prints covered the whole of downstairs. This morning he said he wasn't feeling well , came downstairs drank a pint of coke for breakfast & promptly threw up everywhere. He's one spoilt only child - even his Mum is- Granny comes in every day does all meals for them , cleans & does the laundry! I rest my case Ju

Honestly Ju; He sounds like quite a lot of rather "normal" teenagers I know over here. They're not especially spoiled, it's just the way the society has made a turn.
If that way is right or wrong will always be up for discussion and we won't really know the answer until they them self grow up and have kids. I'm sure if you ask your parents and their friends they will say you and your peers did a lot of spoiled and lazy stuff too. Also remember, many of the parents of todays teenagers were brought up with what we call "free upbringing" - they were allowed to do as they pleased without norms and standards - Now how can you expect those persons to be able to inflict something they never experienced?
I do feel sorry for the grandmother but in one way I think she put herself there by her own doing.
Be happy you haven't done the same mistake with your son!

Hi Meike/Ewa No I don't think badly of him - I think its the first time he's been away from home & as we all know with kids when out of sight you don't know what their behaviour is going to be like. But there definately is a difference in culture & the way of thinking etc - neither one of which is right or wrong. It is now 7.40am here & have been into wake him 3 times - now its time for the wet flannel- tee hee Ju

hi ju methinks you should remember you are a God! i must admit i'm glad i had 3 girls they were easier to deal with. teenage boys always seem more work regardless of nationality. i once had 2 french students - 1 would only eat if he covered his food in tomato ketchup the other stowed his dirty washing under the bed and i had to go and catch it! cris
